Packing list
Hiking packing list for national parks
This hiking packing list for national parks is a printable checklist. Mountain and desert parks can swing 30°F (about 17°C) between a cold dawn and a hot afternoon, and phone signal disappears at the trailhead.
This list covers five days of day hikes with nights near freezing. Wayfold keeps it — and your itinerary — available offline, so it still works in the canyon.

How to use this list
Start a day or two before you leave and pack one category at a time, ticking items off as they go in the bag — your ticks are saved in this browser. Quantities follow the trip above: clothes scale with the number of days, with a little extra for spares. Travelling longer, in different weather or with more people? Open the list in Wayfold and it recalculates for your dates, the forecast and everyone travelling.
Packing tips
- 1
Layer rather than bulk up: base layer, fleece and a waterproof shell cover most conditions.
- 2
Carry more water than you think, plus a headlamp, even on short hikes — sunsets come early in canyons.
- 3
Check the park’s official website for road closures, permits and any reservation system before you go.
- 4
Follow food-storage rules where they apply; some parks require bear-proof containers or lockers.
