Packing list
Europe winter packing list
A Europe winter packing list for cold, wet city breaks: a warm waterproof coat, layers, grippy boots, a hat and gloves, and what to leave at home.
A winter city break in Europe means short days, cold mornings and changeable weather: crisp and dry one day, rain or sleet the next. Christmas markets and museums keep you outdoors and indoors in turns.
This list is for a week in cold, sometimes wet weather. It leans on layers you can take off in warm museums and cafés, rather than one heavy outfit.

How to use this list
Start a day or two before you leave and pack one category at a time, ticking items off as they go in the bag — your ticks are saved in this browser. Quantities follow the trip above: clothes scale with the number of days, with a little extra for spares. Travelling longer, in different weather or with more people? Open the list in Wayfold and it recalculates for your dates, the forecast and everyone travelling.
Packing tips
- 1
Layer a thermal or long-sleeve top under a sweater and a waterproof coat, so you can adjust indoors.
- 2
Pack shoes with grip and keep them waterproofed; wet pavements and cobbles get slippery.
- 3
A warm hat, gloves and scarf take little space and make long market evenings far more comfortable.
- 4
Daylight is short in northern Europe in winter. Plan outdoor sights for the middle of the day.
